Depression and Looking After Yourself By Dave Claxton

Depression and Looking After Yourself

By Dave Claxton

In order to overcome depression you need to look after yourself. This will include adopting a healthy lifestyle and scheduling fun activities during the day.
Depression invariably involves sleeping problems. Whether you're sleeping too much or too little your mood will suffer. Aim to get 8 hours of sleep a night and develop healthy sleeping patterns.

(I personally find writing a list of things that I intend to for the following day and listing my activities in order of priority, has proven most useful to me over the years, as I find I can focus more during the day. and by doing this I have a list of objectives that I wish to carry out the next day, it also means I can sleep well, by having the list I find I no longer have to worry through the night.)

Expose yourself to sunlight every day. Lack of sunlight can make your depression worse. It's advisable to take short walks during the day or even pop outside with your tea or coffee for a little bit of exposure to the sun. Sitting in your garden or simply visiting the local park and watching the world by will also assist you with getting some fresh air.

Contributory factors to stress.

• Work overload.

• Being in an unsupportive relationship.

• Taking on too much.

• Dealing with health problems.

Daily relaxation practice can help relieve symptoms of depression, reduce stress and boost feelings of wellbeing. Activities such as Yoga, Pilates, Aerobics, Latin American dancing, zumba, deep breathing progressive muscle relaxation and meditation are ways to help you relax and un-wind.

While nothing can replace the human connection, pets can bring joy and companionship into your life and help you feel less isolated. Caring for a pet can also get you outside of yourself and give you a sense of being needed both very powerful antidotes to depression.

Try to pick up former hobbies that you use to do. Familiarity will help you to express creative yourself.

(My partner swears by attending the local bootcamp style fitness instructor held courses four times a week, she feels she also gains a sense of accomplishment within a team, all striving toward personal fitness and other similar common goals and her personal confidence levels have increased greatly since she started a year ago plus she says it makes her feel stronger and happier generally.)

You should consult your doctor before engaging in physical exercise. Enjoy.
