Everyone Needs What I Offer

Ask a Productivity Expert: "Why Should I Build A Niche Market - Everyone Needs What I Offer?"

Question: "I've thinking about starting a home organizing business. I know when we spoke the other day you recommended that I come up with a niche market. However, I know that almost everyone could use my services. Why should I just go after one type of customer?"

Productivity Expert's Answer: "I know that you are worried about turning away business if you define your niche, but believe me, you won't be turning anyone away that needs your help.

You will just be defining the type of customer you will hunt for. Your time and capital resources for marketing efforts are limited and therefore you need to pick and choose where your time and money are spent.

Having a niche market is an extremely easy way to increase productivity in your business and decrease stress of having to be everything to everyone.

The niche marketing is like fishing example has been greatly overused. But, there are so many people (especially women) starting businesses today that are new to entrepreneurship and haven't heard it yet. So, here it goes...

When you set out to go fishing you choose the proper bait to catch the particular fish you are after. You would not use bait that bass like to eat to catch a marlin, right?

(I mostly work with women business owners; maybe I should have tailored this example to hunting for shoes!)

Defining your niche also makes your day-to-day work much less stressful - your client list is full of the exact perfect clients and customers - the type of people you actually enjoy working with and serving.

Here are a few more reasons why I really think you should define your niche:

  1. Increase your credibility as an expert - Gaining knowledge and experience within your niche immediately sets you apart from most other small business owners who are generalists.
  2. Increase your perceived value - People can easily see the value of what you offer, and potential clients recognize that you're the solution to their problem. They self-select themselves to be your client because you are speaking directly to them in a way that they can relate.
  3. Turn your competition into colleagues and referral sources - Two business owners in the same business but working different niches can refer even more to because they are already fishing in the same general pond... they are just after different fish and can "throw back" to you the ones that fit your niche.
  4. Attract higher quality clients - Attract the kind of clients you truly enjoy and can best serve.
  5. Improve your marketing decisions - You'll know exactly who you want to reach, where to best find them, and how to best spread the word about what you offer.
  6. Improve your marketing effectiveness - You'll see much better results from your marketing time, money, and energy.
  7. Decrease the time spent marketing - All your marketing activities will build on each other, so you'll be creating a powerful marketing engine.
  8. Simplify your business - Instead of trying to be all things to all people, you'll be able to focus on your niche, gain powerful experience, and simplify your office operations.
  9. Command higher fees - Clients are much more willing to pay higher fees because they know they'll get the results they want. They see your past clients and customers as people just like them getting the results they want.
  10. Generate more referrals - It's much easier for people to talk about what you do to the people who most need what you offer.

Hope this article helps you! With all the time spent on this topic we could have already defined your niche!"
